Liberals Call for Peace and Stability in Kenya

TORONTO – Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic Bob Rae today expressed his shock and dismay at the atrocities being committed against the people of Kenya following that country’s recent election.

“What is happening to innocent men, women and children in Kenya this week must be condemned by the international community,” said Mr. Rae, speaking on behalf of the Liberal Party.

“Pressure must be put on Kenya’s political leaders to call for a cessation of violence so that an intensive process can begin to establish a united and peaceful Kenya.”

Mr. Rae called for direct negotiations between the political parties in Kenya with the assistance of international mediation.

“Clearly, there are issues around the election results, with independent reports of serious irregularities in the counting process. These irregularities should be addressed in a timely manner but the immediate focus must be placed on putting an end to the violence and beginning the process of national reconciliation,” he said.

“We strongly urge Canada to join the European Union, the Commonwealth and the African Union in offering up any assistance for diplomatic or political efforts that are needed to bring about reconciliation in Kenya and the region.”
